Color Builds E-mail

You can create millions of unique color build combinations with CMYK. Each color can be defined as a percent from 0 to 100. So for example C=25, M=52, Y=89, K=11 would represent the percentages for each of the four process colors. Each color build definition will be treated as a unique color in the color palette, and you can create basically as many as you like. When color separations are made, all the process color build definitions will be reduced to only four separations for press; the process colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black

Screened Color Builds

While color builds provide a vast color selection for all creative artists to use, it does have one limitation that we would like to point out. This has to do with color builds that are screened, or do not contain 100% of Cyan, Magenta, or Black. If the value of a color is less than 100%, a halftone line screen is applied to represent the percentage of color. You can see below, what a screened color might look like.

Screened and Unscreened

When screened color builds are applied to type (especially small type, 14pt. and under) or thin stokes (rules) the resulting edge will be fussy or soft looking. The edge will be built entirely from screens with no solid colors to define a crisp edge. Now, if your color build does have at least one of the colors Cyan, Magenta, or Black at 100%, then visually you will have a defined hard edge. Yellow was not mentioned because visually it is difficult to define shape.
